Ranks are what seperate the experienced from the non-experienced, and the authority from the non-authority. With the exception of Civilians, USI officers start out as a recruit in the academy and work their way up towards command, should they so choose that path. The bulk of USI's officers (Not players) are either Junior or Warrant officers. As you progress up the rank heirarchy, there are fewer and fewer of these positions available. So there are infinite number of Recruit ranks, while only a small handful of Fleet Admirals, and only one Major Admiral.
The rank is displayed on the USI uniform on the upper left shoulder or on the left arm, by way of the LCM device (the shouldercomm technology is being phased replaced by the LCM.) This location may be modified for non-humanoid species who require an alternate appropriate location.
Junior Officers are typically officers who are still in the Academy or have not opted for Senior Officer Training (we currently do not role play this training period.)
Warrant officers contain officers who have not completed Academy training ( thus inelligable for Senior Officer advancement ) or have not passed or decide to not pass Senior Officer training. The bulk of USI's Aegis Corps (our Space Marines / Infantry ) are Warrent Officers.
Senior officers are officers who have passed the Academy and Senior Officer Training and are allowed to go onto Command School ( Currently limited to a brief captainship of an Academy Ship) and later onto High and Major Command Status.
NOTE: Updated Salary and Rank Designations will follow soon. Check here for the updates. We also have recently updated our ranks to enhance the universe and gameplay experience. A table of old ranks and comparison to the new ranks is available here.

* Civilians are not exactly a rank, hwoever are shown for salary and explaination purposes. Civilians are not Officers of USI and therefore do not have many of the obligations and responsibilities that USI requires of its officers. However, Civilians do not typically have any authority above a Junior Officer. There are certain special occasions (All which must be approaved by appropriate Hi and Majcomm officers.)
An extended list of Civilian positions and 'near' rank status is being developed.
The departments in USI collectively run the show. Each has their own part in the smooth running organization, and all have skills and talens which compliment others at various times throughout their own career.

 |
Navigations
Navigations department has both combat and non-combat positions. While navigations is a dept that everyone has some basic skills taught in the Academy, they finer skills are much more advanced and require constant training to maintain. These skills are required for a starship or even a infantry drop ship to make their manuvers to keep the ship out of danger of both enemy fire or the harsh enviornment of space.
Combat Positions : SFC Pilot, SFC Navigator, Infantry Drop Pilot, Infantry Troop Transport, Any Combat Ship Pilot, Any Combat Ship Navigator
NonCombat Positions: General Pilot, General Navigations, Shuttle Transport
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |
 |
Sciences
Sciences is the deptartment in charge of studying the universe around us whilst we go about it. They not only study and figure out exactly what it does, but they also work closely with other departments (specialties) for developing their findings into useable technology. The Research and Development of USI is done using Sciences and Operations. There is no combat sciences.
Positions: Astrophysics, Cellular Sciences, Quantum Mechanics, Temporal Physics, Soliton Mechanics, Spacial Fold Phyics,
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |
 |
Medical
Medical is a necessary position aboard all ships and stations throughout USI's influential area. With both combat and non-combat positions, medical is charged with not only fixing what goes wrong with the officers health, but also with maintaining healthy enviornments and health programs to keep officers and civilians healthy alike.
Combat Positions: Combat Medic, Field Surgon, Infantry Health Monitor, Combat
Non-Combat : Post-Combat Psychyatrist, Ships/Station Doctor, Specialists, Nurse, Enviornmental Health, General Psych, Psionic Health
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |
 |
Operations
Operations is another dual type department with both Combat and noncombat positions available. They are the Engineers, mechanics, computer repair, and fixers of USI. Often working closely with Sciences (some even have specific science specialties to compliment their Operations positions) they implement, maintain, and help develope technologies used in this day and age.
Combat Positions: Combat Mechanic, Combat Hacker, SFC Mechanic
Non-Combat: Engineer, Mechanic, Computer Specialists (Programming and otherwise) general maintainance (like repairing a ships Soliton Core, or Drive matrix) SFC Engineer (overall SFC work, maintainace, etc.)
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |

Security
Security is USI’s Policeforce for both IN the USI ( internal affairs ) and out. They provide for the security, defense, and justice of USI. They are also in charge of providing safety and aid to anyone who needs it. They are best described as a policelike department. While noted as non-combatant, this is due to a difference in training - thought they are fully trained and skilled with weaponry. A good way to explain the difference from Marines is that Security are trained upto SWAT level of combat, smaller groups and forces, mostly designed for internal 'security' of the USI. Death and severe causualty are very minimal aside from disaster ( like a ship being blown to bits by a nasty SCM Destroy ). For Ship Tactical Position, Security forces are trained upto MIS level of combat. They will take that position on the bridge and coordinate accordingly.
Positions : Internal Security, SWAT, Crowd Control,
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |

Marines/Aegis
The war level armed combat troops. They are designed for Assault and Defense against openly defiant Galactic Powers. Their job isn’t policing, its combat and ensuring the livelihood and Safety of USI against all those that oppose it. Their scope of training is for full scale War condition combat, whether it be hand to hand or Galactic Space Battles, or planetary invasion. The Marines know their job to be hazardous, for both them, and those who oppose them. Crowd Control isn’t their expertise, crowd removal is - by lethal force usually. This is what separates the Marines from the Security officers. Marines are typically desensitized soldiers who crave blood and conflict.
Combat Departments of Medical, Operations, Navigations are registered under the marines authority - though their department is not. This is to increase effective coordination during war conditions.
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |

Command
Command is the authority heirarchy of USI. After completing command school Commander Elite's have the option of going through and becoming part of USI's command and authority. These positions starting with First Officer :
First Officer, Captain, Task Force Command, Fleet Force Command, and many others. These positions also have other sub positions, many which are desk jobs, others are hands on in the field. While not always combat oriented, command will often find themselves in command and in combat.
NOTE: List will be updated as new positions are created. |
